Truth be told, I don't have a Pixel 5a 5G and don't plan on ordering one. Not for a while at least. My next phone will be either the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro. However, I do have a Pixel 5 and there is so much similarity here that I suspect a really good performer in the 5a.
Let's talk about what's different. Of the Pixel 5 and the 4a 5G, the 5a has the largest display and the biggest battery. The 5a now has an IP rating of IP67 and a metal frame, unlike the 4a 5G. So far so good with what's different as you can clearly see much-needed improvements. The A-series is not a device where you will see real innovation, however, iterative updates that will improve the overall user experience is the name of the game.
Now let's get into what's the same. Well, a lot here is. The one thing that stands out obviously is the overall design and what you get is pretty much a 4a 5G. Design is very subjective so your mileage may vary. I don't mind Google being consistent here especially with this only being the second year since the design language was first introduced. Outside of that, you get the same good cameras backed by excellent software, fast charging when it's time to charge, and the same processor in the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G.
My thoughts on the Pixel 5a 5G
The Pixel 5a 5G is a device I would recommend to your average consumer. Of course, you have some people that enjoy higher-end devices and this is probably not the phone for them. However, I believe the 5a strikes a balance of value and features most people are looking for in a modern smartphone. With the 5a you can expect your device to improve over time with updates, an out-of-the-box camera experience that rival phones much more expensive, and all-day battery life that can now last well into the second day. What more can you ask for out of a smartphone that's well priced and will be supported for years to come.
Conclusion
You will hear. Oh, the Pixel 5A is boring. Or the Pixel 5A is so similar to last year's model why did Google even make it. My main takeaway is that Google has a winning recipe and why mess up a good thing for the sake of doing something different. I believe Google is on to something with their A-series of phones. The 5a builds on an already solid foundation of the line-up and best believe this model will give higher-end phones a run for their money in all the areas that matter and you can't go wrong with that in my book.
